Shawn L.
Buckhanan is the son of George K. (deceased) and C. Jacquelyn Buckhanan, both
New Mexico natives. He was born on February 22, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He
attended public schools in New Mexico and California, and graduated from
Albuquerque High School in June 1979. Upon completing high school, he attended
the University of New Mexico on an academic scholarship in Business Management.
The degree of Bachelors of Business Administration was conferred through
the University of Phoenix on March 31, 1996 – Perseverance paid off!
While in college, he enjoyed being a member of the University of New
Mexico Marching Band where he played the alto saxophone. In the spring of 1980
he joined the ranks of the mighty men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, Sigma
Gamma Chapter where he served as Keeper of Finance and Basileus from 1980-1983;
President of the Black Student Union; and a member of the Associated Students
group. He was employed for four years at the Career Planning and Placement
Center at the University of New Mexico as the records clerk and editor of the
job placement center newsletter. He interfaced with every major company
representative in America and a few overseas.
On Saturday, August 1, 1981, he married the beautiful Rosalind G. Chelf-Buckhanan
in a candlelight ceremony. He
recalls his wedding day as “the day my best friend came walking down the aisle
of the church to meet me so we could continue our love affair that began when we
first met in 6th grade.
To this union were born two handsome baby boys. Shawn II, who is 17 years
of age and in 12th grade, and Solomon, who is 14 years of age and in 9th grade.
They are academically, spiritually, physically, and athletically astute.
Rev. Buckhanan was licensed (1981) and ordained (1984) through Mt. Olive
Missionary Baptist Church of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He was groomed under the pastoral leadership of the late Dr. Walter
Constello Trotter (4 years), he announced his call and served under Dr. Del T.
Phillips, Sr. (2+ years), of Mt. Olive, and was trained for Pastoral Care by
Bro. Walter F. Thomas, Sr. (9+years), Pastor of the Faith Missionary Baptist
Church of Phoenix, Arizona.
He currently serves as Pastor of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church (9+
years), Sierra Vista, Arizona; Member of the Sierra Vista Ministerial Alliance;
Active political candidate for the City of Sierra Vista City Council; former
commissioner of the Citizens Advisory Council (City of Sierra Vista); Member of Gathering
Arizona
in Prayer
(Praying Pastor's group); Moderator, Southern Arizona Missionary Baptist
District Association 1999 - Present; Paradise Baptist State Convention of
Arizona - Representative to the National Baptist Convention Home Mission Board
and Minister’s Conference Treasurer; and Instructor to the National Baptist
Convention Laymen's and Youth Department.
